Stephen Graham’s touching offer to adopt co-star after family tragedy

Stephen Graham offered to adopt his This Is England co-star Thomas Turgoose after his mother died.

The celebrated actor, best known for his roles in Snatch and Gangs of New York, lent his support to his young co-star following his mother’s death from cancer.

Graham and director Shane Meadows were ready to take the young child actor under their wing if things didn’t work out with Thomas’ father.

Speaking about the offer on the Private Parts podcast, Thomas recalled: “My mum passed away from lung cancer after I finished filming This Is England.

“She never got to see the finished film.”

He continued: “When my mum died I moved in with my dad and I didn’t know him, so Shane Meadows and Steven Graham were going to adopt me if things didn’t work out with my dad.”

Thomas was just a young 13-year old boy when he played the role of Shaun Fields.

Stephen portrayed the role of sociopath Combo in the gritty 2006 film and the pair filmed lots of scenes together.

In 2018 Thomas married his childhood sweetheart Charlotte Revell on New Year’s Eve and invited many of his This Is England co-stars to the ceremony.

Stephen was among the guestlist along with other castmates such as Vicky McClure and Andrew Shim.

On Instagram, Thomas uploaded a wedding photo with the rest of the cast, captioning it: “Family.”

Thomas also confessed on the podcast that if he didn’t have a career in acting, things would have turned out very differently.

“I was destined for prison. Shoplifting things I didn’t need,” he revealed.

“There was a hardware store in Grimsby that I used to steal spray paint from for no reason.”

Thomas went on to appear in the This is England follow-ups in 2010, 2011 and 2015.
